On behalf of the Organizing Committee and the TEAM Steering Committee, we warmly welcome you to the 3rd International Symposium of TEAM (Tephritid Workers of Europe, Africa and the Middle East) in Stellenbosch South Africa. After two preceding meetings in Europe (Mallorca 2008, Crete 2012) this is the first time we meet in Africa. We are, therefore, extremely pleased to observe the attendance of the numerous delegates from more than 20 different African countries, in addition to our colleagues from Europe and the Middle East. This is in large part due to the generous support of many private and official sponsors, featuring in this program booklet, to whom we express our special thanks.
During this symposium you will be able to become acquainted with the latest developments and research results from fruit fly researchers of the three regions. More than 100 posters and oral presentations will give you an insight in recent advances in the fields of fruit fly behavior, physiology, ecology, biogeography, distribution, and invasion biology as well as practical implications with regard to conventional and biological control, trapping and attractant developments, surveillance programs and management techniques including Area Wide Integrated Pest Management (AW/IPM) and Sterile Insect Techniques (SIT). Nowadays, one has to rely more and more often on established networks comprising colleagues and units with varied expertise in complementary fields, in order to be successful in research, especially if it requires a synergy between basic and applied research. This gathering of more than 130 researchers will provide you with the opportunity to strengthen such relations, but also to meet old friends and make new ones.
The setting of the meeting, Stellenbosch or the “Eikestad” (Town of Oaks), is a splendid location in itself. Situated in the southernmost tip of the African continent, it is in the heart of the Cape Winelands. The Cape is one of the most important horticultural regions in South Africa but it is also one of the most important biodiversity hotspots in Africa with an unique flora and fauna. We hope you will find some time to explore the natural beauty of the region, discover its exquisite cuisine and wines, and meet the friendly people of this Rainbow Nation.
You can help us in making this event a great success and we look forward to meeting all of you over the next days.
